JJ HAMMOND

Biography and CV

Biography

JJ Hammond, born in 2005 in Beverly Hills, California, is a mixed-media artist whose practice unfolds across studios in New York, Miami, and Düsseldorf. Raised across Asia and the United States, her multicultural background forms a rich foundation for her artistic exploration. Hammond works with unconventional materials—ranging from repurposed toys and wood to retro televisions, iPads, and LED lights—creating immersive installation and wall-based pieces that evoke memory and self-reflection. She graduated from Miami Country Day School in 2023 and completed a course in Art and Finance at Sotheby's Institute in New York. JJ continues to learn through her community and the stories shared by those she meets at exhibitions, using these encounters to further inform her creative process.

Rooted in themes of childhood, emotional development, and the quest for inner understanding, Hammond's work is a vibrant call to reconnect with the inner child. Inspired by artists like Louise Nevelson and Nam June Paik, as well as the psychological insights of Dora Kalff, she blends layered symbolism with nostalgic objects to explore the quiet yet powerful forces that shape who we become. In pieces like Sparks and Simulated Minds, viewers are invited to awaken buried memories—Sparks captures the fleeting flashes of memory in colorfully spiked forms, while Simulated Mindsplaces human forms with screens for heads in surreal arrangements, reflecting the tension between upbringing and modern technological life. Hammond's art asks viewers to slow down, look inward, and rediscover the simplicity, honesty, and openness of early experience.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, including her solo exhibition Reminiscences in Miami (January 2025), Loft Projects New York (November 2024), and a long-term installation at the Sagamore Hotel in Miami (December 2023– May 2024). Additional appearances include Spectrum Los Angeles, Christie's x UNICEF Auction in Los Angeles, Art Expo Chicago, Grand Opening Gallery Miami, and Congruent Space Design District. Her work is held in private collections both nationally and internationally, establishing her as an emerging voice in contemporary art.
