Biography

Alexander de Cadenet (b. 1974, London, United Kingdom) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, prints, and jewelry. He was educated at Harrow School (1987–1992) and earned a B.A. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London (1993–1996), an academic formation that underpins his critical engagement with art history and contemporary visual culture.

De Cadenet’s practice interrogates identity, meaning, and the enigma of art through a language that merges conceptual rigor with iconic imagery. He is best known for the Skull Portraits and Life Burgers, series that recast archetypal symbols and popular forms into philosophical meditations on mortality, power, and cultural consumption. Characterized by an irreverent yet incisive sensibility, his work traverses fine art and object culture, collapsing distinctions between the monumental and the collectible while sustaining a persistent inquiry into how images accrue and destabilize meaning. Major projects such as Skull Portraits – Archetypes, Life Burgers – World Domination Series, and the Meteorite Sculptures exemplify his exploration of form as a site of metaphysical and cultural speculation.

Alexander de Cadenet has exhibited at institutions and venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Courtauld Institute of Art, Underwood Street Gallery, Masai Mara in Kenya, and Alexia Goethe Gallery. His work is held in numerous private national and international collections, and he has participated in prominent projects and exhibitions such as A Fete Worse Than Death, Between Heaven and Earth at the Museum of Modern Art Ostend, the official selection at the Beijing National Museum for the Beijing Olympics, Gothic at Tate Late, and the British Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery featuring the Medici Skull Portraits, affirming his standing within contemporary art discourse.
