Subject Matter: Horse Emotions: The Circle of Life emerges from this lineage as one of Gude's most intimate and organically realised undertakings—a work that, rather than being premeditated, materialised through the gradual revelation of images and texts that seemed to announce themselves. The book documents a world on the verge of passing, crystallised through paintings and reflections that elicit wonder, ambiguity, and existential rumination. Here, Gude revisits the subconscious emotions that have shaped his life, presenting a series of visual–textual meditations in which birth, transformation, memory, and the persistence of the human spirit unfold as a unified artistic organism. The project assumes a near-mythical significance, inviting the reader to participate in a shared global energy—a universal language of sentiment, abstraction, and recognition. Through its layering of lived experience, instinctual insight, and philosophical openness, Horse Emotionsstands as a solitary yet resonant journey, an exploration of the fragile coherence of life and the miraculous continuity that binds all cultures in the ongoing circle of existence.
Frank Gude—born in Amsterdam in 1950 and now working from Heerhugowaard—stands as a distinguished figure in Dutch abstract expressionism, cultivating a painterly language shaped by the confluence of instinct, materiality, and existential inquiry. Trained at the Academy for Graphic Techniques, he has developed an oeuvre that resonates deeply with European traditions of art informel and the spiritual freedoms championed by the COBRA movement. Through disciplined chromatic nuance, gestural force, and a commitment to psychic automatism, Gude's work situates abstraction as both a philosophical practice and an embodied search for truth. His longstanding engagement with themes of perception, temporality, and emotional resonance has culminated in internationally recognised projects such as The Bridge of Life and the Floriade 2002 exhibition, marking him as an artist whose practice bridges personal experience with universal human energies.
